A group of Access course -Certificate I in Leadershipstudents took part in arts and crafts activities, along with morning tea, with Collie Living Well Social Centre clients on Thursday, November 17.

The group, for their end of semester project, was tasked with finding a community group or organisation to assist.

The students visited the centre, planned the event, developed a budget and officially asked for permission for the event.

South Regional TAFE Leadership lecturer Linda Noonan said the project looked at work health and safety as well and celebrating Christmas in their community.

Ms Noonan said the students reached high achievements and learned more about themselves.

“What happens over time, I find, is they come in quite shy but by the time they leave the course they are assertive, so we talk about different types of communication and they learn that assertive communication is healthy, they look at their body language,” she said.

Leadership course student Precious Brooking said the course assisted the learning process.

“Just, generally, to try different things and take on new and fun challenges,” she said.

Ms Noonan said South Regional TAFE has aimed continue with the New Opportunities for Women course in town and set upCertificate II in Leadership.

Living Well Social Centre Coordinator Wendy Akkerman said the project was beneficial for students and clients.

“It’s like an inter-generational thing and it’s also good for them to see how we operate, what we do here and what the clients do,” she said.

“It’s a really good stimulation and a really good social thing for our clients to experience and they can see what the students are learning and going to bring to future generations of clients.”
