The Country Women’s Association of NSW (CWA) has long called for complete review of the native vegetation framework in NSW and believes the reforms currently being debated in NSW Parliament will have positive implications for both the environment and regional communities.
“As the largest women’s organisation in Australia, the CWA of NSW supports the more balanced framework proposed in native vegetation clearing reforms and the opportunities it presents in terms of improved regional prosperity and better environmental management by those on family farms,”State President Annette Turner said.
With thousands of members, the organisation is well-placed to know there is strong grassroots support across the state for the news laws.
Ms Turner said the reforms weren’t just aboutfarmers, but also about sustainable regional development.
“The CWA wants to see our regions flourish and we feel this reform will lead on to great benefits for the surrounding communities,” Mrs Turner said.
“Sustainable agricultural production has profitability implications that extend beyond individual businesses, with broad-ranging impacts for the families and economies of our regional communities.”
Mrs Turner is also quick to point out that sound environmental management goes hand-in-hand with the regional viability the CWA is campaigning for.
“We know the people that best know the land are the ones that own it. Modern farmers have consistently demonstrated their environmental credentials in the actions that they take on farm every day,” she said.
“This reform will allow them to get on with the job and also allow better biodiversity outcomes.
“We do not condone broad scale, indiscriminate land clearing and we also support appropriate checks and balances, along with offsets. We feel under the new proposed laws, better outcomes can be achieved for farmers and the environment.”
